Is Your Hardwood Floor Looking Tired?
A good-quality hardwood floor can last for many years, but that doesn't mean it will always look its best.
Daily foot traffic, furniture, pets, spills and general wear can eventually leave the surface scratched, dull or tired. The good news is that an older wooden floor does not necessarily need to be replaced.
At RH Wood Floors, we regularly transform existing floors through professional hardwood floor refinishing, removing years of wear and revealing the natural timber underneath.
If you have a hardwood floor that has lost its original appearance, refinishing could completely change the look of the room.
What Is Hardwood Floor Refinishing?
Hardwood floor refinishing is the process of restoring the surface of an existing wooden floor.
Depending on the condition of the floor, this will normally involve removing the old finish, sanding the timber to create a clean and even surface, carrying out any necessary repairs and applying a new protective finish.
It is quite different from simply cleaning or polishing the floor. Professional sanding removes the old surface and many of the scratches, marks and imperfections that have developed over the years.
Once we reach the clean timber underneath, we have a fresh surface to work with. A floor that initially looks dark, scratched and past its best can often become one of the main features of the room again.
How Do You Know When a Hardwood Floor Needs Refinishing?
There isn't one single sign. You might start noticing scratches around chairs and tables, worn areas through hallways or a general loss of colour and shine.
- Scratches and scuff marks
- Dull or uneven areas
- Worn varnish
- Stains or water marks
- Fading or discolouration
- Bare timber becoming exposed
- Old or dated finishes
These issues don't automatically mean the floor has reached the end of its life. In many cases, they are exactly the type of problems that sanding and refinishing are designed to address.
Can an Old Hardwood Floor Really Look New Again?
In many cases, years of wear are sitting on the surface. Professional sanding can reveal the character and beauty of the timber underneath.
What Happens During Hardwood Floor Refinishing?
Every floor is different, but we generally begin by inspecting its condition. We need to understand the timber we're working with, the existing finish, the level of wear and whether any repairs are required.
The floor can then be prepared for sanding. At RH Wood Floors, we use professional dust-extraction sanding equipment. The floor is carefully sanded through the necessary stages to remove the old coating and produce a smooth, consistent surface ready for its new finish.
This is also the stage where the true character of an older floor starts becoming visible again.
Depending on the project, gaps or damaged sections may require attention before the finishing process begins. Once we're happy with the preparation, the floor can be refinished.
Choosing the Right Finish
Refinishing isn't simply about making a floor shiny. The finish can have a major influence on how the completed room looks.
Some homeowners want to retain the rich, traditional appearance of their existing floor. Others are renovating their interiors and want something lighter and more contemporary.
There are practical considerations too. A hallway in a busy family home has different requirements from a bedroom with relatively little foot traffic.
Durability, maintenance and the type of timber all need to be considered alongside appearance when selecting a finish. We can discuss the different options with you before work starts.
Hardwood Floor Refinishing Instead of Replacement
One of the biggest reasons to investigate refinishing is simple: you may already have a very good floor.
Removing a quality hardwood floor just because its surface has become scratched or dated can mean throwing away something that could have been restored.
There is also the disruption involved with taking up an existing floor, disposing of it, purchasing new flooring and installing the replacement.
Refinishing works with what is already in your home. It can preserve the natural character of the timber while giving the room a substantial visual change.
That's particularly important in older Dublin properties where an existing wooden floor can be part of the character of the house.
Sometimes the most beautiful new floor is the one that's already in your home.
Can You Change the Colour When Refinishing Hardwood Floors?
Potentially, yes. This is another reason hardwood floor refinishing can be such an interesting option during an interior renovation.
Once the old finish has been removed, there may be several options for changing the final appearance of the timber.
If you've recently changed your kitchen, furniture or overall interior design, you don't necessarily have to accept the colour your wooden floor has had for the last 10 or 15 years.
We can look at the existing timber and discuss what can realistically be achieved.
What About Parquet and Engineered Hardwood Floors?
Not every wooden floor should be treated in exactly the same way. Solid hardwood is particularly well suited to refinishing because there is substantial real timber available to work with.
Parquet flooring can also be professionally restored, although its pattern and construction mean it needs appropriate sanding techniques.
Many engineered wooden floors can also be refinished, but the thickness of the real hardwood wear layer has to be considered before sanding begins. Unlike solid timber, there isn't an unlimited depth of wood available to remove.
This is why we recommend having the floor assessed rather than assuming it can — or cannot — be restored.
Professional Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Dublin
The preparation is just as important as the final coating. Poor sanding can leave visible lines, uneven areas or damage that becomes even more noticeable after a finish is applied.
Professional equipment also makes an enormous difference when dealing with the dust traditionally associated with floor sanding.
At RH Wood Floors, we specialise in professional hardwood floor refinishing and floor sanding throughout Dublin.
Our work covers everything from relatively modern hardwood floors that have become scratched through to older timber and parquet floors requiring much more detailed restoration.
