Introduction:

St Dominik’s Secondary School in Ballyfermot approached RH Wood Floors desperately in need of a new sports hall floor at a crucial time, just before the beginning of the new school year. Principal Lennon said “RH Wood Floors really came through for us with a perfect solution to our sports hall crisis. They saved us a lot of money that we can now use for other activities for the kids, and we just can’t thank Russell and his crew enough.”

The situation:

St Dominik’s sports hall had only been put down for about 10 years and looked like it had been there for about 30 years. This was mainly due to a number of destroyed floorboard near the entrance which was caused when a weight fell on it a few years previous. There was also general wear and tear throughout and some of the line-markings had torn off completely, making it difficult to play a basketball game.

St Dominik’s approached us in the hope of installing a brand new floor which turned out to be beyond their budget. They had already been quoted about €15,000 to fit a new floor before coming to us. Russell went out of his way to quote this project personally, as he was aware of the time pressure and it had been mentioned that €15,000 was way too much.

The solution:

After a careful survey of the site, Russell suggested replacing the broken floorboards and to completely sand, varnish and remark the lines throughout, instead of replacing the entire floor. This was a pleasant surprise to principal Lennon as the previous flooring firm had told him that the floor was beyond repair and the only option was to replace it.

St Dominik’s were completely on board with Russell’s plan after he carefully explained how the refurbished wood floor would be just as durable as a new floor. This option would save them €10,000 and also meet the tight timescales before the new school term began.

The outcome:

Russell and his crew started the project on the 25^th of August, just days after being contacted by St Dominik’s. The broken floorboards were repaired in short order and the entire floor was sanded and varnished in just under 2 days, to ensure it had time to fully dry before starting on the line-markings. There were a morning and evening crew working on this project because of the crucial time pressure of the school’s situation. 

After the varnish was dry, the hall looked great, but it was missing just one thing – the line-markings! A few dedicated members of the RH Wood Floors team came together to give up their Saturday morning and get this floor finished in time. After a couple of hours of hard work, the hall looked brand new with it’s slick, modern black lines throughout.
